1399 A.D. CORONATION OF HENRY IV KING OF ENGLAND
On the 13th of October 1399 Henry IV is crowned King of England, Richard II having
abdicated two weeks earlier. Initially Henry had Richard imprisoned, moving him to Pontefract
Castle towards the end of December. However, after the Epiphany Rising, Henry came to the
realisation that whilst Richard was alive there would always be a danger of rebellion.
Having been held prisoner at Pontefract Castle since the end of December 1399, Richard II wa
s declared dead on the 14th of February 1400. The exact circumstances of his death are
unknown but it is thought that he was either starved to death or killed by Henry IV following the
realisation, after the Epiphany Rising, that keeping him alive would increase the risk of further
rebellion.
