This 1852 50-dollar assay coin is certainly a coin to behold. Minted in the penultimate year of the assay office of gold, this large and hefty gold coin serves as a good symbol of the prosperity that the California gold rush brought. Minted due to demand for large denomination coinage during the gold rush, this coin did well to fulfill the appetite of early prospectors, but the large denomination soon made this coin and unpractical and was soon replaced by the 10 and 20dollar gold coins produced by the assay office and soon after the San Francisco mint. This coin exhibits that spectacular rich orange-gold color and has plenty of details and luster left on the coin. Most of these 50 dollar octagonals were melted and not many survive to this day. With a population of just 8 and 72 finer at PCGS, this beautiful coin is perfect for the person looking to add a hefty symbol of American prosperity to their collection.
