    Description

Offering a very rare 1874 business trade card for the California Assay Office.  Located in Rooms 47 & 48, on California Street, San Francisco, California.  The card describes J. A. Mars, & Wm. Irelan, Jr. as proprietors of the Assay office offering analysis of ores, minerals, waters, etc.
The California Assay Office was first established in 1859, by G. W. Bell, and was then known as Bell's Assay Office.  After Bell's death, it passed through several proprietors hands until 1868, when J. A. Mars took it over in charge, and named the establishment the California Assay Office.  In 1874, Wm. Irelan became co-proprietor, and in 1876, he became sole proprietor after Mars retired.
This early card came out of an early incredible mining antiques collection in Southern California.  A great ephemera addition to a mining collection.
