    Historical Notes from online:  William Henry Smith was born on September 7, 1840 in Houston Co., Georgia, the eldest son of James S. and Susan Smith. His father, a planter, moved his family to Bastrop Co., Texas in 1856. The family was in Fayette Co., Texas by 1860. William's father was determined his son would be a planter and refused him a lamp to study by; however, William studied secretly by the light of burning logs.
    When the Civil War came he enlisted on the 19th of October, 1861 in La Grange, Fayette Co., Texas in Sibley's Brigade, Colonel Tom Green's Regiment of Calvary. He was joined for duty and enrolled in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas by Lt. Joseph D. Sayers. He served until the close of the war (four years). He first served Captain I. G. Killough's Regiment (cavalry), I Company, 5th Cavalry Texas Mounted Volunteers 2nd Regiment Sibley's Brigade. One of his journals gives an account of his march into New Mexico.
    After the War he moved to Tilden, teaching the first school there. On January 9, 1867 the Atascosa County Court decreed that fourteen school districts would be established and that Pleasanton and the vicinity for three miles around, including John Anderson on the Atascosa Creek would be declared School District Number One. W.H. Smith was appointed teacher and Director of the school. He was a mercantile merchant and lawyer who was also an educational leader. He was an active Attorney at Law from the 1870's through the 1900's.
    William Henry Smith met Mary Ann Goodwin at a Methodist Camp Meeting in Somerset, where she was living with her brother, Nathan. The couple was married on February 26, 1869 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas; thereafter, moving to Pleasanton for the remainder of their lives. Their first home was a small picket house they had to clear of hogs before moving in.
    William Henry Smith was Atascosa County Judge from 1874-1879 and Atascosa County Treasurer from 1890-1894
    . He was the attorney for John Malone Harrison and Hugh Lawson Harrison in the Probate of Margaret Jolly nee Renfro, 1888-1889.
    William Henry and Mary Ann Goodwin Smith had six children: Henry Fountain, Martha Susan, William James, Irene Goodwin, Walter Merritt, and Vernon Hinsdale.
    William Henry Smith died on January 10, 1903 in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., Texas, and is interred in the Pleasanton Cemetery, Atascosa Co., Texas.
    CONDITION:
    Normal letter folds, 2 small file holes and a file hole upper top as seen in the image.  It has toning but in very good condition.   The "EBAY ITEM" thing is just a loose piece of paper that is not attached to the letterhead.
