Mr.
Gabriel Emmett Pope
was a lawyer and he was married to
Mrs. G. E. Pope in Goliad Texas in 1895.  She was born in Mississippi in 1870.  Mr. Pope was born in Leona, Texas in 1865, They both died in Bexar County, but are buried here in Goliad at Oak Hill Cemetery. They had two children, J
oseph Rogers Pope
and
Elizabeth Pope Bates
. Mr. Pope was a member of the second class to graduate from the University of Texas Law School. He began his practice in Jeff Davis County where he served as
county attorney
. In 1891, he moved to Goliad, where he served as county attorney and then became
district attorney of the 24th Judicial District.
He also served as president of the First National Bank of Goliad for many years. In 1926 Judge Pope and his wife moved to San Antonio where he continued his law practice. Mrs. Pope was listed as a housewife on the census after their marriage, but apparently she enjoyed being in society as she was vice president of the Goliad Reading Club in 1920.
