FORD TRI-MOTOR
In the 1920s the Ford Motor Company was the best-known name in industry, and
when Henry Ford went into the aviation business the nation sat up and took
notice. The Ford Tri-Motor, affectionately known as the Tin Goose, was one of
the finest airplanes ever built in America. Between 1926 and 1932 a total of 199
Tri-Motors were built. Of all-metal design, they came in two basic modelsthe
4-AT with Wright Whirlwind engines of 220-horsepower each, and the larger
5-AT; powered by 450-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Wasps. These almost inde-
structible planes carried 11 to 15 passengers over every major airline route of the
period, and inaugurated coast-to-coast flights in 1929. Excellent freight haulers as
well, they seemed able to take off and land on even the tiniest airfields. Most
important, the Ford Tri-Motor proved to the American public that passenger air
travel could be safe and reliable.
