With Portugal's entry into World War I, then-Lieutenant Sacadura Cabral was the main proponent of the use of air resources in the Navy.
After completing the pilot course and specializing in seaplanes in France in January 1917, he proposed to the Minister of the Navy the creation of a coastal aerial surveillance device to be effective in constructing enemy submarines attacking national ports and ships.
The acquisition of two seaplanes from the Franco-British consortium FBA and their activation in early 1917 marked the operational beginning of Portuguese naval aviation.
In 1922, after World War I and as part of the centenary of Brazil's independence, Sacadura Cabral had the idea of celebrating these ephemeris with a flight between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro.
The realization of this voyage depended on the development of a navigation system that would allow the aircraft to be safely guided over the expanses of the Atlantic Ocean.
To this end, Gago Coutinho, adept at positioning techniques on land and at sea, adapted to the classic naval sextant an artificial horizon system that would make it possible to respond to the needs of air navigation.
This method was tested on a shorter voyage, on the first flight connection between Lisbon and Madeira, which took place on March 22, 1921.
Successfully completing the test voyage and demonstrating the precision of innovative instruments,
Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral left Lisbon on March 30, 1922 on the Fairey III D Mkll seaplane named Lusitania for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Then begins the first air crossing of the South Atlantic, one of the most important chapters of Portuguese naval aviation and aviation history.
