Welcome toAntiques & Moore!
This listing is for a lovely antique English Sterling Silver 3-piece tea set made by William Bennett, c. 1812.
This set features a ribbed or paneled lower body sitting on four ball feet. The rim of each piece is decorated with a nicely chased border.
The teapot has a hinged lid with a slight dome shape decorated with the ribbed design of the lower body and ending with a attractive silver oval finial with matching decorative edge.
Each piece is engraved on front side only with a family crest/armorial although the engraving is faint on the tea pot
. This is an assembled set although the three pieces compliment each other in style, design and pattern and have probably been together since they were made.
The teapot has the English hallmarks for London, Sterling, date letter for 1813 and maker's stamp for William Bennett. The decorative rim of the pot has a slightly different design and the handle has a different shape than that found on the creamer and sugar although they have always been used together and their differences are not readily noticed.
The creamer and sugar also have the English hallmarks for London, Sterling, date letter for 1812 and maker's stamp for William Bennett. The creamer and sugar have a gold washed gilt interior.
The set includes:
Tea Pot - measures 5 1/2" high (at handle), 12" wide (spout to handle) and 3 3/4" deep. Weighs 635 grams.
Creamer - measures 4" high (at handle), 6 1/4" wide and 3 1/2" deep. Weighs 205 grams.
Sugar - measures 4" high (at handles), 8 1/2" wide and 4 1/2" deep. Weighs 310 grams.
The c
ombined weight is over 1150 grams.
This great tea set is in very good to excellent overall condition reflecting minimal signs of wear. At some point the silver was scratched on the bottom to test for silver fineness, however, this in no way detracts from the beauty of this early 19th Century tea set.
