Description
1884-dated California Gold Charm, so-called "Arms of California" design. One of the series of jeweler-issued pieces sold as charms to avoid problems with the Federal Govt. Locke #1, as noted in the reference "date ambiguous". It is my considered opinion that this die had the date altered from 1894 to 1884, to back date the issue. Inspection of the last digit of the date certainly seems to confirm this. As such it is my belief that this is, or was meant to be, a souvenir of the 1894 California Midwinter Exposition in San Francisco. The Reverse die closely follows Shevlin SH 7-33, which he attributes to Noble. Choice Uncirculated NGC MS-64, ex-Bill Weber. Given Weber's collecting interests, an original origin in the Bay Area of California makes sense if we assume this was a Midwinter souvenir. Pricing is difficult given the type of material, so my Asking Price may be considered a best faith estimate.
