BLARNEY CASTLE IRELAND
About five miles N.W. of Cork, at the junc-
tion of the rivers Blarney and Comane,
stands Blarney Castle, the old fortress of
the McCarthys. The castle was built about
1446 by Cormac McCarthy, surnamed Laidir,
on the foundations of an earlier building.
It was an immensely strong fortress, its
walls being eighteen feet thick in parts.
Some authorities trace the origin of the
term blarney to Cormac himself, who is said
to have delayed the surrender of the castle
by persuasion and promises. The famous
song The Groves of Blarney, written about
1798, embodies the well-known legend :-
There is a stone there
That whoever kisses,
Oh, he never misses
To grow eloquent.
Tis he may clamber
To a lady's chamber,
Or become a member
Of Parliament.
