ROMAN JEWELLERY
The gold armlets, brooches and necklaces
of Roman times in Britain were usually
massive. The period 100-300 a.d. (to which
these bracelets belong) was characterized
by the increasing use of precious stones.
The illustration at the top shows a frag-
ment of a gold armlet found near: Llan-
dovery. A sard or carnelian in a box-
setting is hinged to the serpents head.
The centre bracelet of plaques contains
carnelians and blue paste alternately. The
plaques are joined by smaller plaques with
hooks behind. The portion of the lower
bracelet was found at Rhayader with the
preceding. The decoration consists of two
bands of three triple-twisted wires. These
bracelets are in the British Museum.
