Description
1893 - Committee on Indian Affairs reports on relief petitioned for by John Little and Hobart Williams of Omaha, Nebraska, operating as Omaha Coal Mining Company, regarding a mine they established on property rented from the Iowa tribe of Indians on land bordering Kansas and Nebraska. Little and Williams were to have given the Indians a cut from the coal and clay production from these mines, plus a cord for timber felled for the mining project, which changed its name and headquarters location in the midst of things, and were eventually accused of not living up to prior agreements. The resulting dispute ended up with the U.S. Supreme Court, which ordered cessation of all mining operations on the reserve, and then everyone wanted money back.Four pages; introductory page shown here.
