THE MACE OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
The Sergeant-at-Arms is the custodian of
the Mace which lies on the table in front of
the Speakers Chair when the House of
Commons is sitting. Without the Mace
the House is not properly constituted and
no business can be done. The original
Mace-was lost and a new one made in 1649.
This was Cromwells famous bauble. At
the Restoration probably the same Mace
was altered, being given a new head bear-
ing the Royal Arms and initials C.R. When
the House of Commons is not in session the
Mace is kept in the Tower of London.
