    Electric Yellow -
    Labidochromis caeruleus
    Order: Perciformes  Family: Cichlidae  Genus:
    Labidochromis
    Species:
    L. caeruleus
    Size:4" (10cm)
Origin:Lake Malawi, East Africa Tank setup:Typical rocky Malawi tank
Compatibility:Combine with other mbuna species, not overly aggressive. Temperature:23-28oC (73-82oF)
Water chemistry:Hard and alkaline: pH 7.6-8.6 ; GH 7 plus ; KH 10-12 ideally, but at least 5-6.
Feeding:Small crustaceans and insect larvae, will accept most aquarium foods. More omnivorous than many mbuna, but the diet should still include a vegetable component.
Sexing:There is no obvious colour difference between males and females, but males may show more black on the fins, particularly the ventral fins. Dominant males will tend to be a brighter yellow, but both females and sub-dominant males may appear duller in colour, as well as exhibiting less black on the fins. Males may also exhibit a brownish patch in the area between the eye and mouth.
Breeding:Mouthbrooder. There is no defined territory for spawning.
Comments: One of the most commonly kept and easily recognized of the Malawi mbuna. This species is not overly aggressive, and should mix well with other low to medium aggression mbuna, or even smaller 'haps' in large enough tanks.
    Labidochromis caeruleus
, is a species of cichlid fish also known as
    lemon yellow lab
    , the
    blue streak hap
    , the
    electric yellow
    or
    yellow prince
. It is endemic to the central western coastal region of Lake Malawi in East Africa. A naturally occurring yellow-coloured variant from Nkhata Bay is one of the most popular cichlids amongst aquarium hobbyists.
This species is a maternal mouthbrooder, meaning the eggs are carried, hatch, and develop in the mother’s mouth (buccal cavity), for about three weeks. These fish are ovophiles and the male will excavate a pit in the sand within his territory, in which the female lays the eggs; the female then takes these eggs into her mouth for fertilization.
Electric yellows inhabit water with a pH between 7.8 and 8.9 and an ideal temperature range of 23–26 °C (73.4–78.8 °F).
Electric yellows are peaceful compared to most other African cichlids. Despite this, like all cichlids from Lake Malawi, they are best kept in specialist cichlid aquariums with other Mbuna. As with most cichlids, electric yellows should not be kept with freshwater community aquarium species such as Zebra Danios or Neon Tetras, they may nip the finnage of other species, and are not recommended for freshwater community aquariums because of the differences in the natural habitats between cichlids and other fish species. In an aquarium setting, their natural habitat of rocks and caves should be emulated. Their diet should consist mostly of prepared cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with foods like krill, brineshrimp, and Spirulina flakes. Restrain from feeding these cichlids feeder goldfish, as they are likely carrying diseases that will cause harm to your cichlids
    Size (cm) M/F:
13/8 Electric yellows are a dwarf species
    Habitat:
    Labidochromis caeruleus
is endemic to Lake Malawi and is found in two distinct biotopes. Groups can be found along rocky shorelines at depths ranging from 10 to 40m and in shallower waters amongst beds of
    Vallisneria
spp. Although yellows have a very wide distribution in the lake, wild specimens are very rare. The yellow morph (common in Australia) occurs between Charo and Lion’s Cove in the north.
    Temperature Range:
    Not particular, range between 24C - 28C
    Food:
    L. caeruleus
is an omnivore, feeding primarily upon plants, algae, insects, snails, small crustacea (and their larvae) and molluscs. The teeth of the Labidochromis are long and pointed. They perform like tweezers, prying their prey out of tiny fissures in the submerged rock face. These fish need be fed a wide assortment of foods that include a large amount of vegetable matter. A good spirulina/vegetable based flake food (OSI, HBH, Sera Flora) with occassional frozen/live brine shrimp supplements provides most of their dietary needs. Shelled peas, lettuce and spinach are welcomed.
    L. caeruleus
is very susceptible to Malawi bloat, a disease that is difficult to treat and usually fatal. Less than adequate water conditions and a high protein diet will lead to disaster. Do not feed them Tubifex or blood worms. As mentioned earlier, they love to graze upon algae and nibble plants.
