    Description

Eye-catching VTG Portuguese Silver 4pc Tea Set Horse Spout Paw Feet
Presented is an impressive 4 piece Portuguese first standard silver tea set,
made or retailed by Sarmento and dating to circa 1938-1948. The set is very
ornately decorated with all manner of classical motifs, all fantastically
rendered in their casting and hand chased detailing. Each piece of the set
stands on four paw form feet, with curved legs joining the body at bold acanthus
form mounts, flanked by little rosettes. Around the widest point of each piece
is a continuous band of decoration like stylized sylphium or similar classical
plants, with another band of acanthus decoration around the lids. The handles
are finely carved from rich wood, with round florette decoration at the joint
where they meet the bodies at the top. The spout of the teapot and the coffee
pot are particularly detailed, done in the form of some kind of animal or
heraldic beast, perhaps a horse, whose open mouth forms the pouring
spout. The pieces in the set are all very well made from thick, heavy gauge
silver with a nice feeling of weight and quality in the hand.
    The set consists of:
Coffee pot: 11 ½ inches tall, capacity of 6 cups (48 fluid ounces/1419
    milliliters).
    Teapot: 10 ¾ inches tall, capacity of 6 ½ cups (52 fluid ounces/1538
    milliliters).
Sugar bowl: 8 5/8 inches tall.
    Creamer: 9 inches tall.
Each piece of the set is stamped with the Portuguese eagle hallmark (in the
shape used for the city of Lisbon) guaranteeing 916 purity silver, as well as a
maker's mark for Sarmento and another mark we aren't familiar with.
This set is in great overall condition. One of the wooden handles of the
sugar bowl has had a break and subsequent glue repair, but the repair is well
done and quite strong. The handle of the creamer is likely a replacement, but is
well carved and matches the rest of the handles very well. Otherwise there are
no leaks, no splits, no dents, and no solder repairs. No monograms.
The total weight for the set is 3384 grams or 119.3 regular ounces.
