Salem Towne classic Colonial design - 1796
General Salem Towne, soldier, business leader and family man, built this grand house in 1796. An upstanding, timber framed home of simple and elegant lines, it is a portrait of the disciplined, vigorous man who built it.
The prints you are purchasing are crisp, high resolution black line copies on white bond paper. The original drawings were beautifully delineated in 1934. This extensive set of 17 drawing sheets includes a site plan, floor plans, exterior elevations, sections, and many fine details such as a staircase, cabinetry, mantelpieces and interior decoration. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. These plans are ideal for a flat site. The main block of the house is a classic 2 story, 4x4 plan, 2 rooms on either side of a central hallway that stretches from the front door all the way to the back. A 2 story wing extends off the back. As it stands, this house contains 4 reception rooms, a large kitchen and as many as 8 bedrooms. A simple modern adaptation would be to devote the first floor of the back wing to a garage. If fewer bedrooms are needed this rear wing could be made a single story. An unusual feature of this house is the continuous clerestory window that lights the attic. The home has outside dimensions of approximately 47’ x 73’.

SHIPPING: Your drawings are shipped to you, rolled, not folded, in a Priority Mail tube. The pictures on eBay show typical sheets with borders. Each sheet has a similar border with title. If you have any questions about these drawings or others that I am offering, please contact me. I will do my utmost to answer your questions.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL Federal style house, not a pseudo-colonial tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Orders shipped to addresses outside the USA may be subject to customs duties at their destination. The buyer is responsible for any such duties.
