Built around 1681 by David DesMarest, a French Huguenot founder of the New Jersey colony, this fine old sandstone home reflects Dutch influence, no doubt attributable to the fact that the DesMarest married into local Dutch families. The home has all the dignified informality of a well-run, prosperous early American farm. In 1890 it was thoroughly and lovingly restored. These drawings reflect the restoration.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. These plans are ideal for a flat or low sloping site. The ground floor contains a bedroom and bath to one side of the entry, always a convenient feature. On the other side of the hall are a living room, “drawing room”, dining room and kitchen. Three bedrooms and a bath occupy the gambrel roof attic. The house, including porches, has outside dimensions of approximately 33’ x 67’.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD:
These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL historic house, not a pseudo-historic tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf
The original drawings from which these dimensionally accurate scans were made are kept at the Historic American Building Survey, in the Library of Congress.
