    Description

Gorham Sterling 4 Piece Tea Coffee Set, Melon Monogram 1929, Heavy Zeppelin
    Description:
4 Piece, Sterling Silver Gorham Melon Tea and Coffee Service
One of the finest designs, this “Melon” pattern Coffee Pot and Teapot, Cream and Sugar by Gorham have elegant forms that seem to swell out from the base to the high shoulder, with ribbed walls that form panels and chased scrolls that cascade down from the high shoulder. The lids complete the form with a compass  of arrows that begin from the base of the ivory and sterling knobs (which mirror the forms of the body) - and reaches out to two finely chased borders.   On each pot there is a single  - obviously hand chased - flourishing  A in the cartouche that melds into the surrounding decoration.  The opposing side’s cartouche lacks the A.
There is no give to the handles and no sway to the hinged lids.  The set came from the original family and was carefully looked after.  Each piece is hefty and substantial as is common in American heirloom sterling silver sets. Besides the Gorham Sterling Silver mark all pieces bear the marks
GORHAM / and a cursive D mark -  zeppelin mark 1929 (except coffee pot) / Sterling / 880-3 / with an additional mark noting the volume
