Description
Japonesque sterling silver and mixed metal tea set. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1879-1880. This set comprises teapot, creamer, and sugar.Each: Bellied with short reeded neck and foot ring. Bracket handles (teapot handle stained wood). Teapot has gently raised hinged cover with ball finial and s-form spout. Creamer has discreet lip spout. Allover honeycomb hand hammering applied with lots of period motifs: oversized leaves and lily pads as well as granulated soil; rich and varied population of crabs, fish, frogs, snails, lizards, and spiders. Creamer and sugar have gilt-washed interior and 3-letter script monogram engraved on handle.
Hallmarks include no. 2105 and date letter for 1879 (sugar) and 1880 (teapot and creamer). Excellent condition with rich patina.
