A TABARD OF VELVET AND SILK BROCADE
The Tabard is an heraldic coat usually
emblazoned with the arms of a Sovereign.
The remarkable relic shown here is made
of velvet and silk brocade worked with the
Royal Arms of Great Britain as quartered
under the Stuart Kings. It is of Scottish
origin and was probably made for the Lyon-
King-of-Arms who is supreme in heraldic
matters in Scotland, and who corresponds
there to the Garter Principal King of Arms
(of the College of Arms) in England and the
Ulster-King-of-Arms in Ireland. This Tabard
is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
