    Description

In connection with the inauguration of the world's first Transatlantic passenger service by the new Zeppelin airship Hindenburg, American Airlines arranged flights to and from Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, first to Newark, then New York City's primary airport, and from there westward to the Midwest, then down to Texas and cross continent to Los Angeles, California. American made these connecting flights for each visit of the Hindenburg in 1936 and the service was planned for 1937 as well, then discontinued by the loss of the airship. This is high quality collateral of the period, the ticket envelope promoting the new Douglas DC-3 overnight "Southerner" sleeper service which would take passengers along a southern flight route across the US, connecting both coasts and on to Europe via the Hindenburg. Envelope is designated for passengers Ginzel and Gerhardt, who flew from Newark to Lakehurst and on the Hindenburg's eighth eastbound North Atlantic flight in September 1936 along with notation regarding Hindenburg connecting flight tickets and instruction to contact Mr. Rhymes, likely their travel agent, regarding schedule over a map of AA US flight routes and hubs. Opening the envelope, one finds complete information about American's sleeper service accompanied by a photo suggesting the safety of air travel was such that one could entrust one's grandparents and children. Certainly the seat they're sharing surpasses anything American offers today! Outside of the envelope beneath the DC-3 is a stamp requesting passengers arrive at the airport 15 minutes before departure, (also surpassing 21st century air travel) and that 35 pounds of luggage would be carried free of charge. As Hindenburg allowed for 286 pounds of free baggage, American passengers were required to make other arrangements to transport any overage to Lakehurst, though passenger coupons note excess baggage calculations and fees on reverse. Two passenger coupons with serrated edges, numbered 17260 and 17261 note the fare of from Newark to Lakehurst, departing at 8 p.m. on September 21 to connect with Hindenburg departing at 10 p.m. The tickets, collected as the contemporary version of a boarding pass, were kept by American personnel, Conditions of passage are specified as well as liabilities for delays, uncompleted flights, baggage regulations etc., on the reverse. Reverse of these coupons also features rubber stamp for American Airlines Los Angeles office dated September 10, 1936. Envelope and passenger coupons in excellent condition for their 85 years and envelope colors are sharp and bright. Thank you for looking at this and my other auctions.
