1902 was a good year for architect Robert Spencer. Sharing offices with Frank Lloyd Wright, in Chicago, he got the plum commission to design Daisy Orendorff and her husband U.G.'s new house. Spencer had a knack for combining the best of the Prairie Style, a free flowing, horizontal flow of plan, with more traditional decorative elements. He was also very skillful at combining natural materials. The Orendorff house, with its brick ground floor, half-timber upper floor, rhythmic windows and bold gables stands as a masterpiece in Spencer's work.
The original drawings were beautifully delineated in 2001. This extensive set of 13 drawing sheets includes a cover sheet, a site plan, 4 floor plans, 4 elevations, 1 highly informative section and 2 sheets of Prairie Style leaded glass window designs. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, the plans offer an excellent starting point. In addition to two principal floors, this house has a full basement and habitable attic. The first floor entry hall includes a small sitting room and half-bath. To one side is a spacious living room with a semi-circular bay window. To the other side is a formal dining room, sun room, and kitchen wing. The second floor contains 5 bedrooms and 2 baths. This floor could easily be adapted for other arrangements of bedrooms and baths. Although suited for a flat site, this house could work on a moderately sloping site as well. It would be ideal in a spacious suburban or country setting. Including porches, this house has outside dimensions of approximately 68'x118'.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD:
These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL historic house, not a pseudo-historic tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf
The original drawings from which these dimensionally accurate scans were made are kept at the Historic American Building Survey, in the Library of Congress.
