    Description

Israel 1974 "First Anniversary of the Death of David Ben Gurion"
    25 Lirot Proof Silver Coin, KM# 79.2
The Israel Government Coins and Medals Corp. was established in 1958 by Prime Minister Ben Gurion for the purpose of commemorating the historical events and milestones of the State of Israel, as well as its outstanding personalities and achievements in culture, science and art. Until 2008, the Corporation was fully owned by the Government of Israel. During 2008, it was privatized.
This coin was made at the Swiss Federal Mint, Berne. It commemorates the first anniversary of the death of David Ben Gurion. David Ben-Gurion; born David Grün (16 October 1886 – 1 December 1973) was the primary national founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. Adopting the name of Ben-Gurion in 1909, he rose to become the preeminent leader of the Jewish community in British-ruled Mandatory Palestine from 1935 until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, which he led until 1963 with a short break in 1954–55.
This silver proof coin is in an unsealed vinyl pouch, which is attached to a black vinyl case with gold lettering on the front. The case is 3-3/16" wide, 2-9/16" high and about 1/2" thick (at the open edge). The coin is round and it has a reeded (or milled) edge.
This proof coin has a mem ( מ ) below the state emblem on the reverse side. It is made of 0.935 fine silver, and it weighs 26 grams. It is 37mm in diameter. The value of the coin does not appear in Arabic numerals.
The obverse side of the coin has a head of David Ben Gurion (facing left) in a vertical rectangle with rounded corners and near the upper right of the coin. The state emblem is at the bottom center.
The reverse side of the coin has a large state emblem in the center. The issue year "1974" is located at the bottom center by the border.
This is a proof coin. Please see the photos. The silver color of the coin may show as black in the images. The photo images may provide a better indication of the actual color. Because all the images were taken through the plastic pouch, any dirt or distortion is due to the pouch and is not on the coin. The coin has never been removed from the pouch. There does not appear to be any toning/tarnish or other defects.
