Description:
On 5 Iyar 5708 (14 May 1948), 1878 years after the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans, and 51 years after the First Zionist Congress in Basel under the leadership of Theodor Herzl, the National Committee headed by David Ben Gurion proclaimed the Yishuv's independence. In line with the wishes of Theodor Herzl, the Independence Declaration read out by Ben Gurion stipulated that the new independent State would be governed by democratic principles, and would strive to become a modern and progressive nation in all respects.
The 40th Anniversary of Independence coin depicts on its obverse the memorable occasion when David Ben Gurion proclaimed Israel's independence. On the coin, exactly as in reality, David Ben Gurion is flanked by two large national flags, and overlooked from a large wall picture by Theodor Herzl, visionary of the newborn State of Israel.
