KENILWORTH CASTLE WARWICKSHIRE
Relic of Kings! Wreck of forgotten wars,
To winds abandoned and the prying stars:
Time loves thee! At his call the Seasons twine
Luxuriant wreaths around thy forehead hoar.
It is difficult to realise that Kenilworth was
formerly a strong lake- fortress, defended by
a moat, and a lake covering about
111 acres. The first castle was built in the
12th century by Geoffrey de Clinton, whose
descendants ceded the fortress to the Crown.
Kenilworth is rich inmemories of Edward IV,
Simon de Montfort, john of Gaunt, and
especially of Elizabeth and her favourite
Leicester, who entertained his Royal Mistress
here in the princely fashion described in
Scotts Kenilworth. After the Civil War
the castle was dismantled by Cromwell's
officers, who cut down many trees and
drained the lake.
