A CARVED MIRROR FRAME
(Attributed to Grinling Gibbons)
The Mirror Frame which is shown in the
picture is carved in limewood and is over
six feet in height. The work belongs to a
period (late 17th and early 18th century)
which is remarkable for variety and freedom
in design in wood-carving, and for the very
high degree of technical skill reached by
woodcarvers. The work of Grinling Gib-
bons in this period is characterized by great
delicacy and accuracy in the copying of
nature. Much of his best work was done
in association with Sir Christopher Wren
for the choir of St. Pauls Cathedral. This
Mirror Frame is now in the Victoria and
Albert Museum.
