A penny (1985 - today) - 100 cents in a new shekel
In September
1985
, the Israeli government decided to exchange the shekel
for a new
shekel at
a
rate of 1,000 shekels for one new shekel.
This time, too, the name "penny" was chosen for the subdivision, so that 10 old shekels became one penny.
This time only the word "penny" was minted as the phrase "new penny" was already used on the coins issued in 1980.
This caused some confusion, and therefore the
Bank of Israel
issued detailed instructions regarding the shape of the new penny coins, in order to avoid confusion between them and the "new penny" coins of the old shekel period.

As of 2018, 10-agorot and 50-agorot coins are in circulation.
The 50 agorot coin bears the inscription "1/2 new shekel".
Until
April 1, 1991,
there was also a single penny coin in circulation, but its issuance ceased because the cost of its issuance far exceeded its face value.
[1]
For the same reason, the five-agorot coin also went out of circulation on
January 1, 2008
.
[2]
According to the Bank of Israel, the cost of issuing the currency on the eve of its abolition was three times its face value, due in part to the sharp rise in
metal
prices
.
