CONCERT IN VAUXHALL GARDENS 1732
The celebrated Vauxhall or
New Spring Gardens were on
the Surrey side of the Thames,
in Lambeth. They were laid
out in the time of Charles II,
and in 1732 were beautified
and became a resort of Royalty
and fashion, who were " here
entertained with the sweet song
of nightingales, in concert with
the best band of music in
England. Here are fine pavil-
ions. shady groves, and most
delightful walks, illuminated by
above 1,000 lamps. In the
centre is erected the temple for
the musicians." The Gardens
were closed in 1859.
