    Description

    FOR SALE IS THIS
VINTAGE 1943 ONE GALLON AMBER BROWN DURAGLAS GLASS BOTTLE JUG WITH THREE (3) NEW SCREW ON CAPS BY OWENS ILLINOIS
. THIS OLD BROWN JUG, ALSO KNOWN AS A PACKER JUG CAME FROM AN ESTATE AND HAS A FULLY STIPPLED BASE (bottom) (embossed stippling is tiny dots poked into the baseplate of the mold, performed here by hand), THE BASE DISPLAYS THE EMBOSSED MAKERS MARK OF OWENS ILLINOIS, DATE CODE 1943, PLANT CODE 7 WHICH IS ALTON, ILLINOIS. THE EMBOSSED Duraglas CURSIVE MARK IS DISPLAYED ON THE FRONT AND REAR BOTTOM HEEL IN EMBOSSED (raised) LETTERING, ALONG WITH EMBOSSED
    ONE GALLON
ON THE FRONT AND REAR UPPER BODY. NO CRACKS, CHIPS, WITH AVERAGE SEAR AND MINOR SCRATCHING ON THE OUTSIDE FINISH. THE INTERIOR IS RATHER CLEAN WITH SOME GUNK THAT MAY REMOVE, GIVEN THE RIGHT TOOLS. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS BOTTLE FOR FOODSTUFF. I AM UNSURE WHAT CAME IN THIS BOTTLE MANY YEARS AGO, ALTHOUGH IT DISPLAYS A BOTTOM MOLD PREFIX B, INDICATING PACKERS & PRESERVERS TYPE CONTAINER, MADE BY OWENS ILLINOIS aka JUG PACKERS. 11 1/2" tall X 6" diameter WITH A FULL ONE GALLON CAPACITY. I HAVE INCLUDED THREE (3) MODERN AND NEW SCREW ON PLASTIC TOPS (caps) THAT ARE FUNCTIONAL AND WILL WORK GREAT TO COMPLETE THIS NICE ONE GALLON AMBER COLOR GLASS JUG. YOU WILL RECEIVE ONE (1) AMBER BROWN GLASS JUG SHIPPED BY THE SHIPPER OF MY CHOICE DUE TO WEIGHT.....
    what is duraglas?
This was the proprietary name for a process used by the
    Owens-Illinois Glass Company
where the surface of the hot, just produced bottles, were sprayed on the body, shoulder, and neck (not base or the top of the finish) with a stannic chloride vapor that allowed the tin to bond to the outer surface and providing scratch resistance and durability to the bottles.  (Information courtesy of Phil Perry, engineer with that company.)  This process, and the embossed notation of it ( in script) on the base of many
    Owens-Illinois
products - began in 1940 and continued up until at least the mid-1950s, though the process is still in use today without the notation (Toulouse 1971; Miller & Morin 2004; Phil Perry, O-I engineer pers. comm. 2007).
