THE GLOUCESTER CANDLESTICK
The Gloucester Candlestick was made about
the year 1110 for Peter, Abbot. of Glou-
cester, and given by him to the Church of
St. Peter (the Cathedral) gt Gloucester.
The design is remarkable for the imagina-
tion displayed in the masses of ornament
and figures of men, monsters and birds
intertwined with amazing intricacy. The
casting of this work (in bell metal) was a
remarkable technical achievement calling
for great manipulative skill on the part of
the founder. The Candlestick is gilt and is
twenty-three inches in height. It is now pre-
served in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
