Description
When the airship Hindenburg inaugurated the first passenger airline between Europe and the United States in 1936, it also introduced the fastest means of sending US air mail dispatches to destinations worldwide, based on the speed at which the Zeppelin crossed the North Atlantic, even with long layovers at its new world terminus at Lakehurst, New Jersey. For 1937, with same dy turnaround, the mail would be even faster and the UK announced it would participate in the North Atlantic Zeppelin airmail service on the same day the Hindenburg was lost. This seldom seen flyer advertises the speed at which mail dispatched from New York can reach Europe and over 300 destinations as far off as South Africa and Australia based on the two day average Zeppelin crossing time. Following loss of Hindenburg, the speed at which mail could cross the North Atlantic would be the speed of the fastest liners, averaging five days from dock to dock. Measures approximately 8 7/16 by 3 1/2 inches. Folded in quarters and some dog-earring in evidence, though colors are sharp and bright for 79-plus years and overall very good condition. Thanks for looking at this and my other auctions.
