ROYAL DOULTON CHARGER PLATE, DR. JOHNSON AT THE CHESHIRE CHEESE, ENGLAND

This imposing, 13 1/2” Royal Doulton English charger depicts “Dr. Johnson at the Cheshire Cheese.”*
The plate is 13 1/3” in diameter and was produced in 1952. It shows virtually no wear. There is no fading, cracking, crazing or staining. There are no holes in this model (as opposed to the previous iteration), as this was meant to be a tabletop piece rather than a wall piece. If you hold it outside in bright light and really search, you will see light knife marks, and there are three tiny chips on the back, as shown @ 5X magnification. The plate is numbered D6377. This is a beautiful and rare Royal Doulton piece, in great condition for being nearly 70 years old!
*About the series: Dr Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784), the son of a country bookseller, was one of England's leading literary figures best known as the compiler of the first major dictionary of the English language. He founded a club which included painter Joshua Reynolds, philosopher Edmund Burke and poet Oliver Goldsmith and they met at coffee-houses and inns, including the Cheshire Cheese, which still stands in Fleet Street, London.
