Rummynose Tetra -
Hemigrammus bleheri
Species: Hemigrammus Bleheri
Geo. Location: Rio Negro Basin
PH: 6.0 - 7.0
Temperature: 73 - 82F
Water Hardness: 2 - 12dh
Size: 2.0"
Diet: Flakes, dry/frozen/live foods
Difficulty: 4
Common name: Rummy nose tetra, Red-nosed tetra, Firehead tetra
Scientific name:
Hemigrammus bleheri
Size:2" (5cm)
Origin:South America: Brazil and Colombia
Tank setup:Planted tank with some swimming space for this active shoaler.
Compatibility:Peaceful community fish, keep with other peaceful tetras,
Corydoras
catfish, etc.
Temperature:22-26oC (72-79oF)
Water chemistry:Fairly soft, slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.0) preferred.
Feeding:Omnivorous: flake, small granular foods and live or frozen foods.
Sexing:In mature fish, males are smaller and slimmer.
Breeding:Difficult - very soft, acidic water required. Eggs hatch in 1-2 days.
Comments: These tetras are a spectacular site in a larger shoal, therefore the keeping of 8-10 individuals or more is recommended to appreciate them at their best. They are particularly striking against a background of light green plants.
Two similar species are often sold under the same common names -
Hemigrammus rhodostomus
and
Petitella georgiae
(False Rummy-Nose tetra).
H. Bleheri is a species of its own, found in the dark waters of the Rio Negro basin among plants and roots. This fish is silver with a red nose and eyes. Its caudal has black and white stripes and it is rarely bigger than 2 inches. When kept in the best conditions, its whole head turn red. If stressed or in bad water conditions, it tends to loose its colors and all its appeal.
Rummynose Tetras are peaceful fish. They are very active when kept in schools and can become shy if kept alone. A school of at least 5 to 6 rummynose is recommended. Hemigrammus Bleheri can be kept in species as well as in community tank. Indeed, they do great among other small tetras (cardinals...) but should not be keep with other bigger more aggressive fish.
Rummynose Tetras can be quite difficult to acclimate and should not be used in a beginners tank. Lots of hobbyists have had troubles to keep this fish alive after a few weeks in their tank. Some recommend to have this fish in a quarantine tank before introducing it to the community tank. During this period of quarantine, the fish should not be fed and one should observe any trace of illness. It's been said that this fish is particularly proned to Ich. It is also very sensitive to nitrate and frequent water changes must be done on a regular basis (nitrate should be kept under 30mg/l). Water conditions (soft and slightly acidic) must therefore be controled frequently with a ph included between 6.0 and 7.0 and a dH not superior to 10.
A 15 to 20 gallons tank can be used to keep 10 Rummynose Tetras. The tank must be planted with roots and other aquarium woods. Floating plants that diffused the light are also often appreciated from these Tetras. Filtration is essential in order to keep the water clean and this fish in the best conditions. It seems that this mid-dweller also likes water movement and open swimmimg spaces. It is a great scenery to see a school of active Rummynose Tetras in a well planted tank with large open spaces for them to go from one end to the other. This fish is a great addition to community tanks but should only be kept by experienced hobbyists with good notions of water qualilty and its parameters. Rummynose Tetras usually live up to 3 years.
Breeding
: Rummynose Tetra is a difficult fish to breed. Breeding this species should only be tried by experienced hobbyists. Sexual diphormism is not obvious in this species. Males seem to be slimmer and smaller than females but it is hard to tell when females are not gravid.
The breeding tank should have a soft and acidic water (ph: 6.5, dH: 5.0). Filtration could be done through peat to obtain a softer water. Plants and dark substrat can be used in the breeding tank. The tank should not be too bright and lighting should be dimed by adding floating plants. Feeding the pair with live food and making frequent water change in the breeding tank can help induce spawning. When ready to spawn, the male usually danses around the female until she finally releases her eggs. The eggs hatch in 36 hours and fry become free swimming after 4 to 5 days. Infusoria should be fed as a first food to the fry. Artemias naupliis can become part of their diet after a week or when they become big enough to take them. Parents must be removed right after spawning as they would eat their youngs. At this time it is important to put the tank where the fry is in total obscurity. This can be achieved by stiking dark sheet of paper on the side of the tank. Fry are quite small and the challenging part in breeding this species is often to raise them successfully.
