Israel 100 Pruta, 1954 ~ RARE Utrecht DieKM# 19 ~ Tiny Mintage ~ Uncirculated
Israel 100 Pruta, 1954,
ni-clad steel (90% steel, 10% nickel), 25.6 mm dia, 7.3 gm, smooth and plated edge, beaded rim, magnetic, KM# 19 (Kagan P-23). The 100-pruta coin dated 1954 was reduced in size from the earlier 1949 coin and easily confused with the 50-pruta coin. Thus it was withdrawn from circulation soon after its release, and the coins destroyed. So with fewer than an estimated 70,000 coins remaining, it is a rare coin in its own right. However, two dies were used to produce the coin. Most of the coins were minted with the Berne die (700,000 est) and far fewer with the Utrecht die (20,000) so the best estimates are that fewer than 1,100 Utrecht die coins escaped being destroyed.
Ironically, the differences between the two dies were not discovered until some time in the 1960s, well after the coins were withdrawn from circulation. The differences are actually quite apparent and it's strange that they were not noted sooner. The Utrecht die has narrower zeros, the berries are smaller and touch the wreath, the beading is smaller and further from the rim, and the wreath is inset from the beading on the rim.
The coin up for sale is an absolutely stunning example of the Utrecht die coin, uncirculated but not quite Brilliant Uncirculated (BU). You'll occasionally find one for sale, but not in this outstanding condition.
This is a RARE coin!
The images with a white background were scanned of the coin in a flip, so they are not quite as accurate as the ones with the violet background.
