    Description

    Israel 1 Lira, 1968, KM-47.1
    RARE Rotated Reeding (Milling), BU
    Israel
1 Lira, 1968, KM# 47.1 (A-100-6), cupro-nickle, 27.5 mm dia, 9.0 gr, partially milled edge, brilliant uncirculated. In an unusual design, milled (or reeded) sections of the edge alternate with smooth ones: five 36° sections of the edge are milled and five 36° sections are smooth. Normally a smooth section is at the top (12 o'clock position), but in this
    RARE variety
a milled section is at the top. This error was discussed in an issue of
    The Shekel,
and thought to be quite rare.
A later study by R.G. Sidener printed in
    The Shekel
actually identified four variants of the 1 Lira coin:
    1. The numeral "1" points to the
    left
part of a smooth section of the rim. Occasionally seen; a minor variation of #3, the common variety.
    2. The numeral "1" points to the
    left
part of a reeded section of the rim. Seldom seen; a variation of #4 error variety.
    3. The numeral "1" points to the
    center
part of a smooth section of the rim. This is the most common variety.
    4. The numeral "1" points to the
    center
part of a reeded section of the rim. This error variation is very rare in the 1967 lira, but seen slightly more in the 1968. (That is the variation being sold here.)
