THE ALFRED JEWEL
The celebrated jewel which bears the name
of the Saxon King was found in 1693 at
Newton Park near the Isle of Athelney in
Somersetshire. It was to this secluded spot
that Alfred retired when pressed by the
Danes in 878. The enamel work of Saxon
times was a revival of the Celtic art but
in the Alfred Jewel the influence of the East
is seen. The plaque of cloisonne enamel is
surrounded by a fret of the letters :
AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN.
(Alfred ordered me to be made.)
The setting is of gold, the whole being two
inches long. The original is in the Ash-
molean Museum, Oxford.
