Southern Railroad, Montpelier Station, Virginia - 1910
The Montpelier Station, designed by the engineers of the Southern Railroad Company, has a close and unusual tie to one of America's great estates. The Montpelier estate, built by the father of President James Madison, junior, was purchased by William Dupont in 1901. He invited Southern Railroad to bring a line through his estate and retained approval of the design of the new station.
This is the charming single story structure we see today, with its sunny walls and broadly overhanging roof.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. They provide a vivid glimpse of a piece of railroad history. The excellent drawings prepared by the architects and engineers of the Historic American Building Survey provide dimensions and details of key elements of this historic building.
