Criminal court did a rushing business in the days between 1919 and 1925, due to gangland activity, drug addiction, and capitol crimes.
Judge Lynch would preside at two jury terms each year and lasting 2½-3 months.
In one session he tried nine men for murder, one right after the other!
Dope rackets were thriving then, too, and Judge Lynch once remarked that 20 or 30 addicts would be herded into his courtroom each Saturday for sentencing.
He said, “
After a while the odor would become very high.

JUDGE JEREMIAH LYNCH INTEGRAL PART OF BUTTE’S TAPESTRY
Oct 11, 2014
Rags to riches stories are in abundance. The immigrants that came to the United States did so for a better life for themselves and for their loved ones. Some fared better than others. One such immigrant was Jeremiah J. Lynch, a native of County Cork, who became one of the most influential judges in Mining City history.
Lynch worked in the Butte mines, but his goal was to study law. By the time he was 26, he had saved enough money to attend Kent College of Law in Chicago. He never looked back.
Throughout his long career, the judge was admired for his vast knowledge of the law and meticulous personality. He was also a proud Irishman and belonged to a number of Gaelic organizations, including the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Gaelic Athletic Association, Friends of Irish Freedom, and the Robert Emmet Literary Association.
By the time he retired in 1949, he had served for more than 40 years. He was 90 when he died in 1961. In his obituary he was described as “intensely loyal” to the United States and to his homeland, as well. “He was a familiar figure on Butte streets. The tall, straight-shouldered jurist with his booming Irish voice and his hard derby hat was identified and woven into the color of the Mining City.”
