THE WARWICK CIBORIUM
The ciboria or drinking vessels of mediaeval
times are often superb examples of the
goldsmiths or enamellers art. Champleve
enamelling on copper was revived during
the 12th century and it became one of the
most important decorative arts of the
period. The Warwick Cibis about
eight inches in diameter and is of copper
gilt. It is engraved and enamelled with
foliage enclosing figure subjects from the
Old Testament, which are explained by
verses on the border above. In 1717 it
was found in a braziers shop in London,
and later passed to the Warwick Castle
Collection, where it was burnt in the fire of
1871. It is now in the Victoria and Albert
Museum.
