THE SHIELD AND SURCOAT OF THE BLACK PRINCE
The tomb of Edward the Black Prince
stands by the side of the site of St. Thomas
a Beckets shrine in the Trinity Chapel of
Canterbury Cathedral. Above the canopy
surmounting the tomb are suspended the
relics which remain of the actual accoutre-
ments used in the funeral procession of the
Prince. In his will, the Prince had directed
that two chargers with his trappings and
two men wearing his armour (used in peace
and war), were to precede the corpse.
Those pieces which remain belong to the
suit used in war. The helmet retains its
original leather lining but the scabbard has
lost its sword which is supposed to have
been removed by Oliver Cromwell.
