Pleasant Sowell House - A Traditional Colonial Saltbox House - 1822
In 1822 Pleasant Sowell purchased land on Carter’s Mountain and began the construction of this home. Additions around 1840 gave it a saltbox form. It remains in the Sowell family to this day.
The prints you are purchasing are crisp, high resolution black line copies on white bond paper. The original drawings were beautifully delineated in 1979. This extensive set of 5 drawing sheets includes a site plan, 3 floor plans, a section and 4 elevations. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. The walk-out basement contains 2 rooms. The main level contains 5 rooms, 2 of which could be made into a bed/bath suite. The attic comfortably accommodates another 2 bedrooms and a bath. This plan works well on a moderately sloping site. Without the walk-out basement it would work well on a flat site as well. This house would be comfortable in a suburb or country setting. The house has outside dimensions of approximately 28’x29’.
Please visit my other auctions for many other drawings I am offering. I have house plans in wide variety of styles including Colonial, Craftsman, and Prairie, as well as plans of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Irving Gill, Purcell & Elmslie and others.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL colonial saltbox house, not a pseudo-colonial tract house as you willfind in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
