HISTORY: The history of Sailors' Snug Harbor extends back to 1801 when New York tycoon Captain Robert Richard Randall built the first institution to care for "aged, decrepit and worn-out" sailors. Over the course of the century the institution grew to include 26 jewels of Victorian design in a variety of styles. The row of cottages, one of which is shown here, are typical Victorian eclectic designs incorporating elements from several styles including Italianate, Queen Anne and a French inspired "Mansard" roof.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. The first floor consists of an entry hall and stair with large and medium sized social spaces adjacent. These could serve as Living and Dining Rooms, with the kitchen in the wing off the back. Alternatively the kitchen could be opened to the smaller social space to create a Family Room. The upper floor currently has 3 principal rooms but this could be arranged in a number of ways to allow for 2-3 bedrooms and 1-2 baths. The house is built over a full basement. On a sloping site this basement could be made into additional living space. However the simple plan of this house would also work well on a flat site with a crawlspace or even a slab foundation. Suitable for a narrow lot, this house would be comfortable in a town, suburb or country setting. The house has outside dimensions of approximately 28' x 49', including the front porch.
