The Harry Smith House - 1890s
The Harry Smith house is an excellent example of a Queen Anne Victorian style frame house. It combines the exuberant decorative detail of the 1880s with the foursquare plan that became popular at the turn of the century. Rooms are spacious and beautifully proportioned, with tall, double-hung windows, fireplaces and bay windows. An expansive porch graces the front, with the horizontal line balanced by the vertical accent of the tower. A large dormer and this tower make an attic that is a complex and interesting space.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. The first floor consists of an entry hall and stair with Parlor and Dining Room on either side. A large kitchen with pantry extends across the back. The second floor accommodates 4 bedrooms and a bath. One of these bedrooms could be converted to a bath, to make a Master Suite. The attic has the potential to contain a further bedroom and bath, as well as play spaces. This house would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. The house has outside dimensions of approximately 41' x 43', including the front porch.
