Vintage Kalo Hand Wrought Sterling Coffee Pot, Chicago Arts & Crafts.
Antique Chicago Arts and Crafts sterling silver hand hammered coffee pot by The Kalo Shop. Pattern #157, 2 3/4 pints.
Dimensions: 11 1/2" (H) x 10" (W), weight: 871 grams.
Overall excellent condition with minimal surface scratches, typical of age, use and polishing. One small dent in side, pictured.
The Kalo Shop was the leading maker of Arts and Crafts movement silver in Chicago, and in many respects was the single most important American handwrought silversmith. The shop and affiliated Kalo Arts and Crafts Community House, a practicing school and workshop noted for silver and jewelry in nearby Park Ridge, Illinois, were founded in 1900 by a group of six young women who had trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. Clara Pauline Barck Welles (1868-1965) was the group's leader and most notable member. The other founders were: Bertha Hall, Rose Dolese, Grace Gerow, Ruth Raymond, and Bessie McNeal. Talented individuals such as Frank Gardner Hale and Edward Oakes were also key Arts & Crafts metalcrafters, and two other large firms -- Arthur Stone and George Jensen -- were in the very top tier of makers, but the Kalo Shop produced the widest range of classic handmade holloware, jewelry, and flatware for nearly 70 years, and was a critical influence in the Arts & Crafts movement.
