WARWICK CASTLE
Dugdale, that entertaining antiquarian, traces
the Earls of Warwick back to Arthgal, a
Knight of the Round Table, and assures
us that the famous Warwick (Beauchamp)
crest of the bear and ragged staff is equally
ancient, the bear being Arthgal's- badge,
while the ragged staff was associated with
Morvidus, who slew a mighty Gyant in a
single Duell, which Gyant encountered him
with a young Tree pulled up by the rant the
boughs being snagd from st. The earlier
portions of the present castle date from the
13th century; Caesars tower, the Gateway
tower and Guys tower from the 14th, and
the residential portions from the 17th and
18th centuries. In 1642 Sir E. Peyto held
Warwick Castle for the Parliament, and
defied the besieging Cavaliers by hoisting a
flag showing a Bible and a winding-sheet.
