Description
Original 1945 color illustrated map of the San Francisco Bay Area created by artist Ray Sullivan. The map depicts recreational, industrial, agricultural, and residential activities along with local landmarks and historical events. It’s a whimsical picture of life in the Bay Area before freeways, sprawl, and Silicon Valley. The reverse contains pictures and descriptions of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
The map formed the cover of “Within the Golden Gate,” a souvenir booklet presented to delegates of the 1945 “San Francisco Conference,” which resulted in the creation of the United Nations.
Ray Sullivan was a San Francisco artist and illustrator. He co-founded the design firm Patterson & Sullivan with J. E. Patterson in 1921 and remained active through the 1970s.
Dimensions: 11" x 33" and printed on heavy paper similar to card stock.
Condition issues: the map was originally a trifold book jacket and contains some staple marks and shelf wear at the middle crease (the booklet spine). See attached photos.
Overall a wonderful pictorial map suitable for framing. Not a reproduction.
